Technical Writer

JOB SUMMARY

As Technical Writer you will be responsible for creating clear, accurate, and comprehensive technical documentation for Rational Acoustics software products, ensuring that users can effectively understand, implement, and troubleshoot our software applications. This role plays a critical part in enhancing the overall user experience and facilitating the successful use of Rational Acoustics software.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Learnin' and Explainin
      • Produce high quality documentation including user guides, help files, release notes, API documentation, support articles and tutorials for our software products.
      • Become familiar with Rational Acoustics existing documentation, learn our “voice”and adopt, guide and refine it going forward.
      • Keep the end-users in mind, striving to make complex technical information understandable and approachable for both technical and non-technical audiences.
      • Collaborate closely with software engineers & product managers to gather information and insights necessary for documentation creation.
      • Test software for functional behavior when required
    • Organizin'
      • Regularly update and maintain existing documentation to reflect changes in software functionality, features and user feedback.
      • Manage version control for documentation and ensure that documentation aligns with software versions and updates.
      • Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of documentation while adhering to style guides and best practices.
    • Creatin'
      • Create and incorporate multimedia elements such as photos, screenshots, videos, and diagrams to enhance the clarity of documentation.
      • Assist in developing copy for training materials and resources for internal and external users, including webinars, workshops and tutorials.
      • Assist in editing/proofreading of copy other departments

      Position may perform all or some of the responsibilities above. All positions perform other related duties as assigned.

      QUALIFICATIONS

      In this job, the ability to learn and communicate technical information is paramount. Breaking down complex processes and systems into fundamental tasks and principles for methodical explanation is essential. While prior knowledge of dual-channel FFT measurement and its application in professional audio system engineering is not required, the ability to learn, understand and then explain it is. An enthusiastic attitude towards learning is key.

          • Ability to write user-friendly, engaging copy about technical subjects.
          • A basic affinity/understanding of engineering mindset.
          • Ability to provide conceptual outlines and abstracts for written documents / manuals / presentations
          • Strong project organizational skills
          • Superb written and interpersonal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail
          • Proficiency with documentation publishing software like Help and Manual
          • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Suite
          • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
          • Ability to work independently, and as part of a collaborative team
          • Self-starter, able to manage time and meet deadlines
          • Positive attitude and a sense of (geeky) humor
          • Comfortable working in a kid-friendly, dog-friendly, casual environment
          EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
          • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Technical Writing, Communications, English, or relevant discipline preferred. Or an equivalent of education plus experience in a similar position.
          • 3+ years experience as a technical writer, preferably in the software or technology industry.
          • Must be able to provide a portfolio of technical writing samples for review
          • Experience with software development a plus
          • Experience/familiarity with the professional audio industry and/or audio related software a big plus (but not required).

          SALARY & BENEFITS

          The Technical Writer position is a full time, hourly, non-exempt position with a preferred requirement of 40 hours per week, and minimum requirement of 30 hours per week.  Salary is in the $27-35 hour range, based on qualifications and prior experience.

          LOCATION

          Our preference is for this to be an in-house position at Rational Acoustics HQ in beautiful Woodstock, CT.  But remote will be considered for the right candidate. Remote employees must be able to travel to Rational HQ for at least 2 weeks during onboarding, and then on a semi-regular basis, or as needed. Some additional travel to industry/training events may be required.
