Q.  What’s new in Smaart v.7?
A. For an overview of Smaart v.7 please see the Smaart v.7 Info Page

Q.  Is Smaart v.7 dual platform and is it Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6) compatible?
A. Yes.  Smaart v.7 is compatible with Intel-based Macs running OSX 10.5-10.10 (Leopard to Yosemite), and Windows operating systems from XP to Windows 8.1 (including both 32 and 64-bit versions). Upon the purchase of a Smaart v.7 license you will receive links to the Mac and Windows installers (if you purchase a license code online) or a disk with both Mac and Windows installers on it (if you purchase a hard copy package).

Q.  Is there a downloadable demo of Smaart so I can evaluate it prior to purchase?
A. Yes. Click HERE for the Smaart v.7 Demo.

Q.  How many installations of Smaart v.7 do I get with each license?
A. As with Smaart v.6, each Smaart v.7 License comes with 2 available installations so it can be installed on 2 different machines (i.e. laptop and desktop, shop computer and field computer, etc.) right off the bat. You can also move the license between computers using the new “Block/Unblock” feature (see below for further explanation), as long as you do not have it active on more than 2 computers at any one time.  Additional installations (or “seats”) can be purchased and added to your license if you wish to have the same license running on more than 2 computers.

Q. What are the Smaart v.7 System Requirements?
A. Click HERE for the Smaart v.7 recommended system requirements

Q. I am upgrading to Smaart v.7.  Can I still use Smaart v.5 or v.6?
A. Yes. Smaart v.7 does not overwrite or change anything about existing previous-version Smaart installs.  V.7 can live happily side-by-side on the same machine with any previous version of Smaart.

Q. I am upgrading to Smaart v.7.  Can I sell my previous version of Smaart to a buddy?
A. No. Smaart licenses are non-transferrable.

Q. I want to upgrade to Smaart v.7, but I don’t know my v.6 (or v.5, or v.4) license number.  Where can I find it?
A. Smaart v.6 license numbers can be found by logging-in to your account at  Smaart v.5 license numbers can be found in the “Help” menu within the program under the “About” section.  Smaart v.4 license numbers can be retrieved by contacting Barb at Rational Acoustics.  Please provide as much information about your v.4 license as possible when you contact her (date of purchase, company name, your name, etc…).

Q.  Where do I manage my Smaart v.7 Licenses?
A. Smaart v.7 licenses are managed via our online license management site at  All Smaart v.6 and v.7 owners must have an account at the license management site in order to register their license number and activate installs on that license.  This is a very important site for the management of your Smaart license, so we recommend that you bookmark it and write down your account name and password somewhere safe.  If you previously had an account at (for the registration of Smaart v.6) your account information (including computer IDs, license unlocks, account names, passwords, etc…) has been retained in its entirety and transferred over to  So there is NO NEED to create a new account unless you are a new v.7 user or are upgrading from v.5 or earlier.

Q.  I can’t remember my account name and/or password for my account.  What do I do?
A. If you know your account name but have forgotten your password, the system can e-mail it to you if you click on the “Forget Your Password?” link on the main log in page.  If you have forgotten your account name, you can contact us via e-mail or call us at 860-928-7828 and we can look it up for you.

If you are sure that you already have an account (for example if you have a registered v.6 license) but have forgotten your account name/password PLEASE DO NOT just create a new account to register a Smaart v.7 license.  This makes it very difficult for us to look up your license history if needed and may alter your future upgrade pricing path.  Please contact us first (with as much info as possible) to look up your existing account.

Q.  What is the difference between “Registering” a license and “Activating” an install?
A. When you first purchase a license of Smaart v.7, you must register the license number to an account at This assigns that license number to you along so it cannot be activated, transferred or installed by anyone else without your permission.

If you purchase your license online via e-mail delivery, you will find your license number in the body of the e-mail and you must register that license number to an account by either creating a new account or logging in to your existing account.

If you purchase your license via hard copy disc package, you will find your license number on a card inside the package and you must register that license number to an account by either creating a new account or logging in to your existing account.

Once your license is registered to your account, you can download the installers for the program from within your account (or access them from your disc) and install the program onto your computer using the appropriate installer.

Following installation, on the first run of the software, you will be presented with an activation screen containing that computers 10-digit “Machine ID” and asked for an “Activation Code” to authorize the installation.  This Machine ID is a unique code that identifies that specific computer.  Likewise, the Activation Code is a unique code that will only work for the computer with that Machine ID (much the same as SmaartLive v.5’s PIC system).

If the installation is on a computer that is connected to the internet, you can choose the “Activate Online Now” option to automatically acquire the necessary code and activate the installation.  This is the quickest and easiest way to activate an installation and we highly recommend that you use it whenever possible.

If the machine is NOT connected to the internet, you will need to make note of the Machine ID and then log into your account at via another computer to acquire the necessary code to activate your installation.

In either case, to complete activation you must also enter your Smaart v.7 license number (20 alphanumeric characters: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX) and the password for the user account to which the license is registered.

PLEASE NOTE:  Detailed instructions for all of the above (complete with screenshots) are available in the “Smaart v.7 Licensing and Installation Help” file which all v.7 users should read prior to installing and activating your software.

Q.  Do I have to pay for Smaart v.7 version updates?
A. Major version upgrades are paid (for example Smaart v.7, v.8, v.9….).  Beyond that are what we call “after dot” updates (for example v.7.0.5 or v.7.1 or v.7.1.5….).  These “after dot” updates include bug-fixes, feature add-ons, performance updates, etc… and these are always free to registered Smaart v7 users.

Q.  Where do I find the latest updates for Smaart v.7?

Q.  Our company bought a license of Smaart, but the guy who registered it has left the company.  Can you give me the account name and password?
A. No.  We do not divulge account names or passwords.  If you do not know the account name and password for the account holding your company’s Smaart license and you cannot get them from the former employee, the only thing we can do is to transfer the license to a new account which you would create for your company.  But we can ONLY do this with the permission (in writing) from the former employee who registered the license and/or proof of purchase of the license from your company.

We highly recommend that licenses purchased for company use be registered to accounts set up as a “Business” at (this is an option when you first create an account) and not registered to individuals.  If you do have company-owned licenses registered by individuals, be sure to get their account names and passwords and store them somewhere safe.

Q.  How do I move a Smaart v.7 license between computers (i.e. what is Blocking / Un-Blocking)?
A. When you want to retire a computer from active use as a Smaart workstation and reclaim the activation used for that machine for your available installations pool, you will need to deactivate or “block” the Smaart installation on that machine.  Deactivating an installation renders it unusable on that machine until/unless it is reactivated.

PLEASE NOTE:  Detailed instructions for Blocking / Un-Blocking (complete with screenshots) are available in the “Smaart v.7 Licensing and Installation Help” file which all v.7 users should read prior to installing and activating your software.

Q.  I am planning to update my hard drive and/or install a new operating system.  Will this affect my Smaart v.7 installation?
A. Yes, updating a hard drive and/or installing a new operating system can affect your Smaart v.7 installation by changing the Machine ID that Smaart recognizes.  If you are doing a planned upgrade, please refer to the “Smaart v.7 Licensing and Installation Help” file for instructions that are specific to your situation.

Q.  My computer got run over by a forklift and I (obviously) couldn’t block Smaart v.7 from the computer beforehand.  No I can’t re-install it on my new computer because I am out of available installations.  What do I do?
A. If your computer suffers a catastrophic crash (electronically or physically) and you didn’t have a chance to block Smaart from the computer beforehand.. all is not lost.  We can “Crush” an install from the back-end here at Rational Acoustics.  “Crushing” an install blocks Smaart from that specific Machine ID and puts an installation back into your available pool of installs so you can re-install it onto a new computer.  However… PLEASE NOTE… “Crushing” an install is permanent.  Once we do it, your specific Smaart license will never, ever work on that Machine ID again and no one can undo it (not even Barb!).  So before you ask us to crush an install, you must be absolutely positive that the machine is beyond repair and/or will have a completely new hard drive.  Also, we require requests for install-crushing to be submitted in writing so we have backup approval in case anyone comes a-yelling at us.

Q.  My company/school has a v.7 license with multiple installs available on it.  Can I just install it on one machine and make a machine image and then copy the machine image onto the rest of the computers?
A. No. Smaart v.7’s licensing system creates a new Machine ID for each computer that a license is installed on.  The Machine ID is computer-specific and cannot be shared across multiple machines.  You must install Smaart v.7 directly onto each machine that you wish to use it on.

Q.  My computer is partitioned into Mac and PC drives.  Can I install the same Smaart v.7 license onto both?
A. Yes, you can install Smaart v.7 onto both Mac and Windows partitions within the same computer, but each must be installed separately since each partition will be assigned a separate Machine ID by Smaart.  And it will use 2 installs from your available install pool.

Q.  Will there be a dongle-based licensing system available?
A. There is currently no dongle -based license system available for Smaart v.7.

Q.  I think I own a Smaart license but I don’t know what version and I don’t know the license number and I can’t remember under what name it was purchased.  Can you help me?
A. No.
