    Default Error 523 on Windows 7 x64

Howdy - just installed the demo and on launching it I am getting a 523 error. The first time I launched, I passed the initial "you have started the trial" screen and was then greeted with a BSOD. I was not able to catch the module that was the root of the BSOD. Every subsequent attempt to launch after restarting has resulted in an immediate 523 after the splash screen displays.

    Hardware:
    PC: Intel Core2Duo/4GB Ram/Win7 x64
Audio: have tried both with default onboard Realtek audio and EMU 1616m.

Happy to provide any additional information that may help.

    Thanks,
    Aleks

    Aleks,

Very strange. A 523 should only be fired for the full version, not the demo version. Forgive me for asking, but are you positive that you are running the demo version?

Regardless of demo or full version, the BSOD is obviously a problem. Can you please send me the crash report. The steps to retrieve it on Win7 are below.

    1. Type error into the Search bar on the Start Menu and click the “View reliability History”

    2. Find the Smaart crash line item under Critical Events

    3. Right click the Smaart line item and select "View Technical Details"

    4. Click the Copy To Clipboard button. You can now paste the crash report in an email or reply to this post.

I'm in software and have seen bizarre reports, so I don't blame you for checking if I am using the demo! The installer I used was Smaart7DemoSetup.exe (24.7MB) downloaded from the demo link on the main site yesterday.

The BSOD reports as a windows failure, not specifically tied to Smaart so I'm not sure you'll be able to pull anything from this:

    Windows

Unfortunately, the Windows Error Reporting service is failing when I try to report this issue, though I suspect it will result in the generic "make sure your drivers are up to date" message.

I'm on the verge of flattening this laptop and building it up fresh - though it may be a few days yet in case there is any followup you'd like me to try.

    Thanks,
    Aleks

    Aleks,

Nope, that crash report doesn't help. But thank you for pulling it.

Are you running Pro Tools by any chance? With some older versions of PT there was a bad ASIO driver installed that would crash Smaart on start up. Though that usually came through with kernel32 as the fault module.

The most likely case is a bad audio device driver. Though I don't recall one causing a BSOD. When there is a bad one it usually just crashes Smaart. This is because when Smaart launches it polls the system for audio devices and then attempts a connection to each device. If one of the drivers crashes, Smaart will crash as it is the parent process.
