I'm about to jump back into the recording side of the business. I know there were issues running Smaart and Protools on the same machine a few years ago. Is this still the case?

I'll be running a Windows 7 64-bit laptop, and as yet undecided interface for Protools, maybe the Roland OctaCapture if Avid and Roland can get the drivers working, or a Focusrite Saffire Pro40.

Obviously I won't be running Smaart and Protools at the same time.

ProTools and Smaart can live happily on most machines, the problem is actually with the hardware drivers that Avid preinstalls with ProTools for your "convenience". Drivers for the Avid HD and sometimes the ElevenRack recording interfaces are usually included with ProTools. When Smaart starts, it recognizes the drivers but hangs because the actual interfaces are not connected. It doesn't sound like you're going to use the Avid HD recording interface, so once you have ProTools installed go into Control Panel->Programs and Features and uninstall the Avid HD driver. Once that is gone, Smaart should start happily.
